Conservation Analyst at the East Bay Chapter, California Native Plant Society

Orinda Public Library
24 Orinda Way,
Orinda

Mark your calendars now! On Wednesday, April 24, at 7:30 pm at the Orinda Public Library, 26 Orinda Way, Orinda, Mack Casterman, conservation analyst at the East Bay Chapter, California Native Plant Society, will give a talk on Knowland Park’s amazing history and natural resources. Most of us just love the Park because it is a beautiful, peaceful place that provides wonderful habitat for native wildlife as well as knockout views and lovely gentle hikes. But there’s more to Knowland Park than meets the uninitiated eye, which is why the California Native Plant Society cares so much about it. Come and see Mack’s and others’ beautiful photos of the incredible variety of native plants that grow in the Park. Learn about the rare maritime chaparral plant community of the Park and why it is so important that CNPS has fought alongside us for years to protect it!

April 27, 2013, 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM

Help monitor Sudden Oak Death in Knowland Park and surrounding areas! Dr Matteo Garbellotto, who helped us assess the effects on oaks of the proposed zoo expansion, and whose lab at UC Berkeley is a world leader in studying this destructive disease, will once again offer FREE training workshops for Citizen Scientists to help map the spread of Sudden Oak Death (SOD)!

Matteo Garbelotto’s laboratory, in conjunction with the California Native Plant Society, are organizing this yearly survey project, which promises to be the largest ever. Come to a meeting in your local area, collect samples in your community, and have them laboratory analyzed for SOD. This year they will also be working to establish permanent monitoring trees and those Citizen-Scientists with a GPS device or a tablet or phone with GPS ability will be given tags for this purpose. Please come to the training with your device if you want to participate in this advancement.
