I moved in 2003 to a house where my up-sloped back yard is separated from Knowland by a fence. It wasn't until I began to hear about your efforts in 2009 that I began to walk in the park since I was one of those who didn't know that it was a public park. I'm glad that others will learn about the hiking opportunities, and I appreciate the description of walking to see where the zoo expansion will be. I also encourage everyone to realize, as you look at the Google map, or walk in the park that the south side of the park is indeed bounded by the homes of many Oakland residents like me. Some of my neighbors have lived here 40+ years. Our quality of life, to say nothing of our property values, will be "collateral damage" if the zoo expansion is built. I believe that my kitchen will be about 400 feet from the proposed Black Bear cage, and I'll get to hear the wolves howling at night! Then there will be the noise from the gondola all day every day - and oh yes, zoo odors, and on and on...

Our schools and libraries are closing. Shouldn't we be worrying about paying for those? The zoo is a good adventure for one day a year, but our children need our daily attention with proper education every day at well built schools and resources available at libraries. We went to the Zoo once last year. With a family of four, it was over $100 for one day. We can go to Knowland Park behind it for free and see animals in their natural habitat.

Nothing against the zoo, but we taxpayers REALLY have MUCH higher priorities with our crime rates so high and our schools and libraries closing. This luxury parcel tax is an easy No

This has obviously finally happened in response to this blog post, because I checked before posting it just to be sure, and it was not there just a couple of days ago! It only took four years of trying and a publicly shaming column to make that happen. Unfortunately, the address listed for Knowland Park is the Zoo's address, and no information whatsoever is provided about the Park itself, so it still does not give Oakland's citizens any information about how to actually explore the park as opposed to how to get to the Zoo. But at least they now admit that it is indeed a city Park! Maybe--since they obviously read our blog-- they could include a link to this website so that the public can find out how to get to the Park! (We might be able to get that done in another four years...)
